Set up by the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands, the contest is scheduled this year on the second weekend of April.

All performances will be held in Navan (County Meath) at the Solstice Arts Centre.

The music educator and cornet virtuoso John Doyle will sail from Lancashire to adjudicate these official competitions.

The 2014 test piece in the Senior section is "Music for a Festival" by Philip Sparke. The English composer started to conceive it in 1985.

He reworked this 15 minutes piece in three years until the score reached its full potential.

From his studies at the London Royal College of Music, his experience as an arranger and his many compositions, Philip Sparke gained a deep understanding on how wind ensembles can deliver epic and enjoyable music moments.

Philip Sparke has composed more than a hundred pieces, among others: Gaudium (1973), The Land of the Long White Cloud (1979), Year of the Dragon (1985), Earth, Water, Sun, Wind (1999), The Four Noble Truths (2004), Letter from Home (2008), The Sun Will Rise Again (2011).

His works are performed by Brass and Concert Bands all over the world. His new piece "Premiere!" has been performed for the first time in the USA by the Tacoma Concert Band in early March. If you never heard a Sparke piece, it is not too late. Come, be part of the audience and enjoy the championships!
