The programme to celebrate the 1916 Rising began on August 1st with a commemoration of the funeral of Fenian hero O'Donovan Rossa whose death in 1915 played a pivotal role in the movement for Irish Independence.

President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Hertigae Minister Heather Humphreys joined 1500 members of the public to attend the event at Glasnevin Cemetary, Dublin.

President Higgins layed a wreath at the grave on behalf of the people and the rousing oration given by Padraig Pearse at the funeral in 1915 was re-enacted by Jim Roche.

St. James's Band, which played at the funeral 100 years ago, were honoured to be present again at the commemoration.
